The playing of the Stuttgart orchestra is superb…Steuart Bedford[’s]…understanding of the idiom comes through in every bar…

I bought the DVD under review here when it was re-issued in 2008, and have enjoyed it several times since; it is a beautiful rendition… © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Stephen Smoliar, May 2013

It is…an excellent selection for honoring the Britten centennial, since it is one of those rare operas that combines one of the most sophisticated narratives of literature with an equally sophisticated logic of musical structure.

The musical execution provides all that one could wish from a Britten opera. Bedford conducted this ensemble with clarity and precision, and much of the camera work tended to facilitate appreciating the variations providing the interludes. All vocalists performed with the same high level of clarity, keeping their acting consistent with Hampe’s direct approach to the text.

The result provides an excellent way in which we can all celebrate one of the best of Britten’s operatic accomplishments on the occasion of the centennial of his birth. © 2013 Read complete review
