The music-making is generally fine, with tenor Piotr Beczala and soprano Elena Mosuc both sounding fresh voiced and providing fine singing. Leo Nucci…also sings very well…I find Lásló Polgár’s Sparafucile especially effective here, and mezzo Katharina Peetz as his sister Maddalena also sings solidly. The Zurich orchestra under the experienced hand of Nello Santi acquits itself wonderfully in the rich Verdi score and the chorus sounds quite good as well. Picture quality is amazingly sharp on this Blu-ray release.
…tenor Beczala has the “ping” so vital to realize the Verdi style. Further, his Italian diction is quite good for a non-native speaker. I was not familiar with soprano Mosuc who turns in a pleasant…“Caro Nome.”
