Positive Feedback Online, January 2014

This film opera by Jens Neubert is based on Der Freischutz…The results are often stunning. It is a powerful and dramatic opera on film. Almost overwhelming at times. The horrors of wars/battles appeared stunningly real much of the time. There may be greatness in this release. © 2014 Positive Feedback Online Read complete review

This is quite simply one of the best modern visual representations of any opera that has come my way for some considerable time. There are inevitably some points of concern which I raise in my review, but these pale into insignificance when compared with the many merits of the production and the musical presentation. © 2013 MusicWeb International

Der Freischutz will probably never become a mainstream staple of the major repertoire of opera houses outside of Germany but this cinematic rendition is a great way to present this neglected opera to a new audience.

The high definition film is superb in all respects. The singer-actors adapt well to the film medium and there is drama that would not be easily achieved in the opera house. The cinematographers use the natural beauty of the historic locations to give a real sense of occasion.

With fabulous singing and taut musical leadership, Hunter’s Bride is an easy opera film to recommend to all viewers. © 2013 Blu-rayDefinition.com Read complete review

…this is a thoroughly enjoyable performance and presentation of Weber’s score. It’s streets ahead of any of its rivals. Yes, it is a film with a real dramatic impetus as well as being a superb rendition of the music. Those not wholly wedded to the realm of ‘concept opera’ will find it both a refreshing change, and a real and solid pointer to what could be a most interesting future for opera in the visual medium. Those who care about opera as a dramatic as well as a musical art should not let an imaginative venture like this fail for lack of proper support. © MusicWeb International Read complete review

WEBER, C.M. von: Hunter's Bride (Film version of Der Freischütz, 2010) (NTSC) 101692
WEBER, C.M. von: Hunter`s Bride (Film version of Der Freischütz, 2010) (Blu-ray, Full-HD) 108097

This is a beautiful film adaptation of Weber’s opera Der Freischütz…Neubert recruited a fine cast of singers for the film: Juliane Banse, Michael Volle, and Michael König all act on par with their excellent singing. Banse’s performance of Agathe’s arias in Act II are especially memorable.

This is a fine film and I think it’s a successful experiment in engaging a broader audience with opera. Recommended. © 2013 Music Media Monthly Read complete review
