Bill White
Fanfare, May 2015

…this Zurich Opera production is quite well sung and quite interesting to watch. Singing honors go to bass baritone Michael Volle as Simplicius’s hermit father, Piotr Beczala as the boy’s elder brother, and Martina Janková as Tilly, Simplicius’s eventual love. Coloratura Janková, in fact, nearly steals the show with her two lovely arias. Franz Welser-Möst and the Zurich orchestra…play very well and are expertly recorded. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

I particular enjoyed Piotr BeczaƂa’s frequently tongue-in-cheek take on Arnim von Grübben, while Martina Janková also impressed me as the cheerily buxom camp follower Tilly. Both sing strongly and with great technical assurance, as well as entering into the spirit of the piece with real flair and enthusiasm. The Zurich Opera House orchestra, under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst, gives a good account of the score and effectively supports the busy on-stage action.

The original visual image of this 15 years old recording has been upscaled to High Definition quality and…Sound quality is also fine. © 2015 MusicWeb International Read complete review
