Huntley Dent
Fanfare, January 2015

Here the then director of the acclaimed Netherlands Dance Theater, Jiří Kylián, gives The Soldier’s Tale a full modern-dance treatment, but with an eye to entertainment. The familiar characters haven’t changed, and the plot is mimed faithfully.

As for the musical side, the offstage ensemble conducted by David Porcelijn is as expert as any to be heard on disc. The performance was originally televised in 1988 and has transferred to Blu-ray with excellent visual and sound quality. © 2015 Fanfare Read complete review

…this makes for a diverting and enjoyable fifty minutes. The dancers are lithe and fluent in their movements as one has come to expect from the Netherlands Dance Theatre. The costumes are appropriate to the plot. The Princess is suitably alluring and the Devil is appropriately devilish. The instrumentalists are first class and play this marvellous score accurately and beautifully. © 2014 Musicweb International Read complete review

In Jiri Kylian’s choreography Stravinsky’s theatrical-musical Histoire du soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) is getting a phenomenal unity of music, dance, play and light. © 2014 Pizzicato
