WEINBERG, M.: Passenger (The) (Bregenz Festival, 2010) (NTSC) 109079
WEINBERG, M.: Passenger (The) (Bregenz Festival, 2010) (Blu-ray, HD)

Michelle Breedt, with her formidable, dramatically rich mezzo, and Elena Kelessidi, whose soprano cuts through the bleakness like a shaft of sunlight, give powerhouse performances as Lisa and Martha; their final confrontation in the prison camp is hair-raising. Robust tenor Roberto Saccà is vocally and emotionally versatile as Lisa’s husband, who was previously unaware of his wife’s disreputable past. The roiling Wiener Symphoniker is a full participant, often embodying the opera’s savage contrasts. The charismatic conductor Teodor Currentzis shows thorough mastery of this difficult but spellbinding work. © 2016 Opera News Read complete review

Richard Sininger
American Record Guide, March 2016

The music fits the libretto perfectly. Vainberg, a protege of Shostakovich, offers an astonishing variety of musical styles to accompany the rapidly changing moods of the drama.

The performance, filmed at the world premiere run of performances at Bregenz, could not be better.

The many female supporting roles are well sung and beautifully acted. …The Vienna Symphony and Prague Philharmonic Choir perform ably under Teodor Currentzis. There is simply nothing wrong with this production. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

David Fanning
Gramophone, February 2016

The Bregenz production had the knife-edge atmosphere of a major rediscovery, and it features strong performances from most of the principals and from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Teodor Currentzis. The entire thing is superbly recorded and filmed. © 2016 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

The WholeNote, January 2016

If not quite “a masterpiece,” with its well-sung, effective music and potent drama, The Passenger will surely wrench guts and jerk tears. © 2016 The WholeNote Read complete review

Porgy Amor
Parterre Box, December 2015

The assaultive pages of Weinberg’s score have real bite and thrust under Currentzis’s characteristic flailing, but the orchestra also savors delicacy and stillness. © 2015 Parterre Box Read complete review
