This blu-ray release features a live 1988 recording of Puccini’s bittersweet masterpiece from the San Francisco Opera, with Luciano Pavarotti as the quintessentially romantic Rodolfo and Mirella Freni as a sweetly vulnerable Mimi. Francesca Zambello’s naturalistic production is beautifully designed by David Mitchell and the conductor is Italian Tiziano Severini, who was critically acclaimed for his passionate and spontaneous reading of the score. Pavarotti made his debut in Italy in La Bohème in 1961, and this remained one of his signature roles throughout his long career. The outstanding cast here also includes Gino Quilico as Marcello, Nicolai Ghiaurov as Colline, Stephen Dickson as Schaunard and Sandra Pacetti as free-spirited Musetta. © 2016 Read complete review

…the performance! It’s Pavarotti at his finest. He really could act! Just look at his facial expressions: such emotional involvement so finely expressed. His singing is beyond praise. Freni is just as—even more—emotionally involved. Her ‘Donde lieta uscì’ is exquisite, heart-breaking singing that could move a stone to tears. There is fine work from Pacetti, Quilico, and Dickson. Ghiaurov, Freni’s husband, does a star turn as a rich-voiced Colline. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

…they [artists] all generally sing well, as do the comprimarios; it’s always a treat to hear (and see) the magnificent Italo Tajo, …The conducting of Tiziano Severini is duly supportive… the orchestra and chorus fulfill their roles ably. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review
