JF Weber
Fanfare, September 2016

Music is not really the primary focus of this film, though several madrigals and a Tenebrae responsory are sung by two vocal ensembles. …I found the DVD fascinating and recommended it to music lovers. The Blu-ray has the advantage of a high-definition picture and better sound. © 2016 Fanfare Read complete review

Paul-James Dwyer
Toronto Early Music News, March 2016

This film documentary was initially released in 1995 and bears the hallmarks of Herzog’s eccentric and singular talent, tells the chilling story of the 16th century Italian composer Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa.

This film is powerful, unsettling, and engrossing. Its gorgeous music by Don Carlo fixes the dichotomy of his tortured life in the viewers mind strongly, as one of history’s many mysterious enigmas. © 2016 Toronto Early Music News
