The WholeNote, May 2016

…a very effective documentary film by Peter Rump. Gergiev leads the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra through a rehearsal during which he analyzes and explains his approach to the iconic work. This is intercut with commentary and piano examples by Gergiev and historic footage of Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez and Alexander Toradze. Gergiev makes a very strong case for his interpretation—rough and rhythmic, rather than romantic—and provides an insightful introduction that shows how this 100-year-old masterwork is still fresh and vibrant. © 2016 The WholeNote Read complete review

This is a most interesting and stimulating video combining fascinating, arresting glimpses of Gergiev’s rehearsals of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps with footage of the composer at work.

Utterly absorbing; not to be missed. © 2016 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Robert Benson, May 2016

Peter Rumps film documentary always is fascinating, as far as it goes. …It is a pleasure to see Gergiev in such a relaxed mood talking about music he loves. © 2016 Read complete review, April 2016

[Stravinsky] was not always the best conductor of his own music, but he certainly knew what rhythms he wanted and what tempos he expected sections to be played at, and the differing thoughts and styles of Stravinsky and Gergiev (and other top-notch musicians brought into the film, notably Pierre Boulez) make this a fascinating film… © 2016 Read complete review

…the film’s main interest are the rehearsals with veteran Russian conductor Valery Gergiev and the Rotterdam Philharmonic preparing a performance of Le Sacre. These segments offer an enlightening glimpse into the methods of an experienced conductor who knows what he wants and communicates this with his players verbally as well as on his Hamburg Steinway. …he cautions players not to pay undue attention to others nearby, but to focus on their own work—it’s the conductor’s job to put everything together—he seems to be reminding them. © 2016 Read complete review
