Paul L Althouse
American Record Guide, September 2016

The musical contributions of Jena, his chorus, and soloists are quite good; this comes before the period instrument revolution, so tempos are moderate. Nonetheless, you would hardly buy this for the musical performance. This is for people who love dance and want to witness one of the most ambitious projects of recent times. As a non-dance guy I can say I found much of it emotionally gripping, and it added a new dimension to my admiration for this piece. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Matthew Richard Martinez, June 2016

BACH, J.S.: St. Matthew Passion [Ballet by J. Neumeier] (Hamburg Ballet, 2005) (NTSC) 109218
BACH, J.S.: St. Matthew Passion [Ballet by J. Neumeier] (Hamburg Ballet, 2005) (Blu-ray, HD) 109219

Sellars has at [Neumeier’s] disposal not only one of the finest orchestras and choruses in the world, but some of the most thoughtful singing artists on the stage today, led by tenor Mark Padmore as the evangelist. Padmore, an exceptionally thoughtful and fluent performer, narrates the action with a knowing focus and pure tenor. He is a masterful storyteller. Padmore is joined by German baritone Christian Gerhaher, another outstanding vocal communicator…

The other soloists are equally as effective, led by the bass voice of Roderick Williams as Jesus. His voice is warm and his deportment noble. Camilla Tilling sings the soprano arias with ease. Tilling’s is a beautifully direct instrument. © 2016 Read complete review

Remy Franck
Pizzicato, March 2016

This is an extraordinary way to Bach’s St Matthews’ Passion, deeply spiritual, superbly artistic, and even though the musical side is less convincing, the performance is absolutely striking. © 2016 Pizzicato
