Joel Kasow
Fanfare, March 2017

Bella Figura, as one can see from the headnote, makes use of five composers as nine dancers alternate on stage. As usual, there is no shortage of striking imagery, but too often there is a copycat reaction to the music by the performers (shaking hands or feet to trills). Sleepless is set to a deconstruction by Dirk Haubrich of the Adagio section of Mozart’s K 617 (a piece for glass harmonica, flute, oboe, viola, and cello) with choreography almost as restless and uncommunicative as the music. Birth-Day uses music from various chamber music and symphonic compositions by Mozart and is a joyous mixture of dance and film for “senior” dancers. Sections of the work resemble early slapstick films and succeed in refreshing some of the oldest cinematic gags. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review
