Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold
Fanfare, July 2017

Ingeborg Hallstein makes a commanding Princess Fedora—tall, dignified, beautiful, and determined, and she sings the role securely in her light, high-flying soprano. In his 50s when the movie was made, Rudolf Schock turns in an appealing performance both vocally and dramatically. If his topmost forte register lacks a little heft at this point, it is still exquisite in head voice and falsetto, and he knows how to turn an aria into a dramatic statement. …The supporting cast of convincing actors all resist the urge to camp up their stereotypical characters. Peter Karner’s Toni Schlumberger is an endearing version of Papageno, while his sweetheart Mabel, sung by Isy Orén, proves a winning foil. Jane Tilden creates a sympathetic Carla Schlumberger. Ernst Fritz Fürbringer makes Prince Sergius a fascinating villain, while Werner Abrolat is a gentle, spurned suitor Sasuskin. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review
