Barnaby Rayfield
Fanfare, November 2017

…these two DVDs show Domingo at his generous, charismatic best, injecting some much-needed adrenaline into a static Meyerbeer story and joining in with the glam in Vienna’s lavish staging of La Gioconda. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

David Reynolds
American Record Guide, July 2017

One may or may not like how [Domingo] sings or interprets something, but the voice is consistently in excellent condition: the high notes, the fervor, the passion—everything that makes Domingo popular is here. His interpretations tend to be rather generalized, yet he makes it all work for him.

The other singers are just as strong. …Matteo Manuguerra was a hard-working, underrated baritone who began his career relatively late, but sang well until his retirement. He is an excellent Barnaba, though his howl at the end is stagy in the wrong way. © 2017 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Bruce Surtees
The WholeNote, May 2017

Best Wishes from Plácido Domingo is a well-made presentation box containing three DVDs of two complete operas starring the charismatic tenor in two of the 120 operas in which he has appeared over his operatic career …The orchestra, chorus and ballet of the Vienna State Opera is conducted by Adam Fischer. L’Africaine stars Domingo as Vasco da Gama, Shirley Verrett as Sélika, Ann Swenson as Inès Ruth and Justino Diaz as Nélesko. The orchestra, chorus and ballet of the San Francisco Opera are conducted by Maurizio Arena. The performances are self-recommending, and the quality of the video is in keeping with the standard of the time. © 2017 The WholeNote Read complete review
