Here’s a contender for the best music DVD ever. It contains two hours of jazz great Charles Mingus’s band performing in Europe, two months before their phenomenal saxophonist, bass clarinetist and flautist, Eric Dolphy, dies. Every Dolphy solo is wondrous, scorching across the unstoppable rhythms of Mingus and drummer Dannie Richmond. Also present are tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Jackie Byard and, for most pieces, trumpeter Johnny Coles. Even the fact that several tunes are performed more than once is no detraction, so miraculous is the playing.
