Records International, March 2020

Daughter of a wealthy pharmacist and manufacturer and married to an artistically gifted army officer-engineer, Dalberg only undertook formal studies in 1909, first under Svendsen and then, after his death, with Nielsen, in 1909. She even orchestrated some of the latter’s Springtime in Funen. While the first two quartets (1915 and 1922) are indebted to Nielsen, the third of 1927 has the air of Kodály and Bartók about it, Dalberg being more harmonically experimental and enjoying writing polyphonically; it was only published after her death. © 2020 Records International

Classical Lost and Found, January 2020

The Nordic String Quartet (NSQ) was formed in 2013 by musicians from Denmark and Sweden. They feel a special commitment to rare repertoire by Scandinavian composers, and demonstrate this with their splendid performances of these little-known works by Nancy Dalberg.

Made in 2018-19 at the Royal Danish Academy of Music Concert Hall, Copenhagen, the recordings sound consistent and project an appropriately sized soundstage in a splendid venue. © 2020 Classical Lost and Found Read complete review

The second: strong, lean works superbly played by the Nordic Quartet. Dalberg was a pupil and friend of Carl Nielsen but is a significant and distinctive voice in her own right. © 2019 MusicWeb International

This is a genuinely exciting release, and not only for the devotee of Scandinavian music. These are string quartets of genuine quality, revealing a distinctive compositional voice, here in very fine performances and transparent recording. The music is serious, often very muscular, both strong and rewarding, tonal and assured.

The more familiar Second Quartet is very spirited, more instantly attractive…

Recording quality is as fine as we might expect from this source… © 2019 MusicWeb International Read complete review

The Art Music Lounge, August 2019

Nancy Dalberg was quite obviously a fine composer who deserves wider recognition. The Nordic String Quartet plays with a bright tone and excellent feeling for the music, which makes this an exceptional release in every respect. © 2019 The Art Music Lounge Read complete review
