James A. Altena
Fanfare, November 2014

The documentary is somewhat unusual, but extremely well done overall.

…urgently and enthusiastically recommended. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Anna Schmidt’s Paths Through The Labyrinth: The Composer Krzysztof Penderecki…is…about the avant-garde composer still making music in his 80s and still ahead of his time working with filmmakers like Andrzej Wajda and Stanley Kubrick, plus staying a star in his own right for those in the know as we see in interviews with the likes of Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and in some great interviews throughout.

…[the documentary] does a great job giving us a look at an underrated music genius who deserves much more recognition than he has received. I hope this becomes unexpectedly popular because this is very well done and states its case about the genius of its subject very well. © 2014 Fulvue Drive-in Read complete review

Lawrence D. Devoe, MD, March 2014

Paths Through the Labyrinth provides an excellent example of how a musical documentary should be constructed and for that we should be quite grateful to director Schmidt. Of course, Krzystof Penderecki is an interesting subject in himself and makes the film that much more enjoyable. Hopefully, viewers who were unfamiliar with one of the creative giants of the 20th century will be stimulated to explore more of Penderecki’s works in their entirety…the camera work and scripting help to give this Blu-ray a big thumbs up. © 2014 Read complete review
