Positive Feedback Online, June 2015

…Arabella was perhaps the perfect choice for Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapella to mark Straus’s 150th anniversary at the 2014 Salzburg Easter Festival. Their playing…is unfailingly sumptuous and Reneé Fleming and Thomas Hampson have made their roles their own… What an outstanding performance by Thielemann and the orchestra and to top that off with a “dream couple” for Richard Strauss’ roles in the outstanding opera Arabella. The audio is as clean and as typical with most recent Blu-ray discs by the major companies. © 2015 Positive Feedback Online Read complete review

Lawrence D. Devoe, May 2015

I was impressed by Fleming’s performance at age 55, an age when many lyric sopranos are starting to pack it in. Granted, Fleming’s usual vocal mannerisms and less than pristine German diction may not please everyone, but this is one of her signature roles and she can still deliver it. The production’s real discovery is second soprano Muller who brings a breath of fresh air to her role. © 2015 Read complete review

STRAUSS, R.: Arabella (Salzburg Easter Festival, 2014) (NTSC) 717208
STRAUSS, R.: Arabella (Salzburg Easter Festival, 2014) (Blu-ray, HD) 717304

…the conducting is charged and the playing beautiful, so ravishing that one revels even in Arabella’s allegedly arid stretch from the middle of Act II through most of Act III.

Renée Fleming, as Arabella, and Thomas Hampson, as Mandryka, are in good late-career form…their intelligence, musicianship, phrasing, acting and looks carrying the day. Fleming still spins out lovely lines in the role that perhaps best suits her artistry and temperament. © 2015 Opera News Read complete review

STRAUSS, R.: Arabella (Salzburg Easter Festival, 2014) (Blu-ray, HD) 717304

…with the Staatskapelle Dresden under Christian Thielemann, Strauss’s score is heard in its best light, with the orchestra’s contribution leading up to the final reconciliation especially beautiful. There’s fine work from the rest of the cast…particularly Hanna-Elisabeth Müller’s convincingly boyish Zdenka and Daniel Behle’s ardent, strongly sung Matteo. Benjamin Bruns, Derek Welton and Steven Humes are excellent as the three Counts. © 2015 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

With the exceptional Renée Fleming and Thomas Hampson, this production is a superb document, one of the best available. © 2015 Pizzicato
