MOZART, W.A.: Don Giovanni (Sferisterio Opera Festival, 2011) (Blu-ray, HD) 717504

D’Arcangelo is superb with a commanding presence; his dark tone carries a constant threat of violence and his portrayal is the very essence of Mediterranean misogeny. Myrto Papatanasiu as Zerlina stands out for her fine vocalism and noble beauty… © 2015 Limelight Magazine Read complete review

…Pizzi’s intimate version exudes sexual ease and playful movement, executed in a realistic rococo style. The small, bare stage, dominated by a bed, lends the show an improvisatory feel, as if a wandering troupe had just dropped in to put on a morality play. In fact, without the sound, this almost looks like straight theater, so fine are Pizzi’s performers and Riccardo Frizza’s supple musical leadership.

…D’Arcangelo’s desperately disheveled but sumptuously voiced Don dresses in Mephistophelean red for his ritual of nightly cruising, and he throws a party that courts danger and violence. © 2015 Opera News Read complete review

…this is well worth investigating, not least for the conducting of Riccardo Frizza, who is not afraid of accelerating or holding back here and there. The cast led by Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is excellent. © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

MusicWeb International, November 2014

The singing and acting is good throughout…Myrto Papatanasiu’s Anna is good with Carmela Remigio’s Elvira even better, as singers and actresses. As Zerlina, Manuela Bisceglie has an appealing stage presence and a well-supported lyric voice. © 2014 MusicWeb International Read complete review

The WholeNote, October 2014

The cast is virtually flawless: all young singers, mainly Italian, energetic and attractive with voices that could rival any of the big stars; The women especially, among whom Carmela Remigio (Donna Elvira) is probably the most memorable.

But what delivers the biggest punch is Don Juan himself, Ildebrando d’Arcangelo…Here he is a phenomenon, a life force, the essence of the show no one will likely forget. Another young Italian, conductor Riccardo Frizza’s upbeat tempi, a bit on the fast side, keep everything moving forward with the supreme glory of Mozart always shining through. © 2014 The WholeNote Read complete review
