Patrick Mack
Parterre Box, September 2016

…the Uruguayan baritone Dario Solari but as Zurga, …gave the most consistent pleasure both vocally and dramatically all evening. A good thing too, since the staging makes his character the centerpiece of the story. He has a bright, forward sound with a good buzz and a nearly effortless legato line.

His easy projection of voice and character make him a model in this cast. Once he’s got his stage legs under him he displayed a strong tenor-tinged top that was doubly surprising. A voice to watch. © 2016 Parterre Box Read complete review

American Record Guide, September 2016

The performance is quite satisfactory, …Generally, their singing is commendable, and physically they fit the roles of the lovers quite well. I was most impressed by Dario Solari, the one singer in the cast totally new to me. He has a big commanding baritone voice and the acting ability to bring out the emotional rollercoaster of Zurga…

The chorus, dancers, and orchestra of the San Carlo Opera perform very ably under Gabriele Ferro. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

As Nadir, Dmitry Korchak is dashing in his military dress; and like many a fine Russian tenor before him, he easily adapts his lean, pointed Slavic sound to French music. …Roberto Tagliavini is the suavely menacing Nourabad. …[Gabriele Ferro] gives his professional best to Bizet’s delectably fragrant confection. © 2016 Opera News Read complete review

The WholeNote, May 2016

…an exotic, atmospheric, gorgeously melodic score, …Fabio Sparvoli’s visionary staging, all in shades of beautiful blues, evokes sultry Arabian Nights. There is an ever-present ballet of sinuous dancers representing the spirits of the sea, sometimes playful, sometimes menacing…

…Conducted with great expertise by the 80-year-old master, Gabriele Ferro. Beautiful story, enchanting music, eye-popping scenery. A moving performance. © 2016 The WholeNote Read complete review

…a tuneful opera too rarely performed. The work has much more to it than that famous duet recording by Robert Merrill and Jussi Bjorling. © 2015 MusicWeb International

[Patrizia Ciofi’s Leïla was] a fluent and fluid display with beautiful tone of the score’s tricky coloratura… The Russian tenor [Kurchak] has a good lyric voice… Gabriele Ferro’s conducting subtly maintains the tension of the evening without histrionics. © 2015 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
