James A. Altena
Fanfare, January 2014

…this is…a very attractive production and well worth acquiring. The sets and costumes are in period and completely traditional and tasteful. The stage action is thoroughly sensible and in accord with the libretto, and the acting by all the principals quite decent. Among the four lead singers, the standout is Silvia Dalla Genetta as Gulnara. Let’s hope that the exposure she receives here launches her on a major international career, for this is a world-class voice—a dramatic coloratura with a rapid but perfectly even vibrato; rich, penetrating vocal color devoid of shrillness on top; excellent breath control, including some marvelous soft singing; spot-on intonation; and an ability to handle wide intervallic leaps with aplomb. As Medora, Irina Lungu[’s]…coloratura technique is sound, and overall she sings creditably…Bruno Ribeiro is…a major asset as Corrado…he is…a fine singer…with a secure top and real interpretive temperament. In the role of Seid, Luca Salsi brings an extremely potent bass voice to bear, and is quite the formidable villain. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

…[the] staging is well conceived…Costumes are attractive and evocative of the era…Sopranos Irina Lungu and Silvia Dalla Benetta are both excellent…Portugese tenor Bruno Ribeiro…turns in a very strong performance…Baritone Luca Salsi likewise sings well…Smaller roles are solidly sung as are the choral numbers, so that the sum of all the parts here makes for a quite satisfying whole, both musically and dramatically.

This Blu-ray production is, in all probability, as good as it gets, and it is quite good, and a keeper. This is one of the best of the Tutto Verdi sets issued to date, so I would recommend you not wait for a better one. © 2013 Fanfare Read complete review

This is a rather handsome…production that offers some excellent singing…

This is overall a rather nice looking high definition presentation that offers excellently saturated color and pleasing fine object detail in close-ups.

Introduction to Il Corsaro…provides the usual synopsis and background information on the opera.

This production is quite handsome and features above average singing, and in the case of Ribeiro, much more than that. Recommended. © 2013 Blu-ray.com Read complete review

Conductor Carlo Montanaro has clearly understood Verdi’s musical intentions and leads a very idiomatic performance.

Lamberto Puggelli’s staging on the rather small Teatro Regio stage is first rate. The cameras do a nice job of keeping us engaged…courtesy of video director, Tiziano Mancini.

Thank you C Major and Tutto Verdi for the ever helpful booklet and video background and synopsis. This a work that will be best served by going to these sources before viewing.

…soprano Della Benetta…absolutely steals the show. A tip of the cap also goes to baritone Salsi who nails the pasha’s big Act III aria…for those who are determined to see and hear every note that flowed from the Verdi pen, this would be the video choice. © 2013 Blu-rayDefinition.com Read complete review
