James A. Altena
Fanfare, January 2014

I find [Roberto Aronica’s] voice quite attractive [as Stiffelio]…it is steady and well-focused, and has heft and some real ring to it.

For Lina, Yu Guanqun has it all—a lovely voice, evenly and securely produced in every way, matched to ardent vocal passion. An even bigger surprise here is the excellent Stankar of Roberto Frontali…the voice firm and steady, and the interpretation finely honed to bring out all the character’s vacillation between filial love, duty, and anguish and outrage at offended honor.

In the supporting roles, Gabriele Mangione is a superior Raffaele who easily outclasses all rivals vocally…while George Andguladze is a solid Jorg…The conducting of Italian Wunderkind Andrea Battistoni…is superbly impassioned and on target…

…this is the Stiffelio I’ve been waiting for, easily superior to all other versions on both DVD and CD. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Fanfare, November 2013

After several deeply disappointing previous versions on LP, CD, and DVD of this under-valued work, restored to its original form only as recently as 1992 (it was presumed to be lost for almost a century), it finally receives a performance that brings out its many virtues. © 2013 Fanfare

Robert J Farr
MusicWeb International, June 2013

The singing cast here is superior to many in this series… Add a traditional production in period costume, good direction, excellent sound and imaginative, if sparse, stage sets. These elements come together to make a most desirable issue of this too rarely performed work.

With the young Andrea Battistona on the rostrum the orchestra play with style and vigour. They bring out the dramatic nature of the work. As ever in this series, the chorus of the Teatro Regia, Parma, are outstanding in commitment. There is no weak link among the soloists with outstanding acted and sung performances from Yu Guanqun as the erring wife and Roberto Aronica as the cuckolded husband and minister who has to reconcile his inner agony with his beliefs and practices. Both sing with power, good characterisation and nicely nuanced phrasing.

…the discerning Parma audience are rightly generous in their appreciation. © MusicWeb International Read complete review

Lawrence Devoe, April 2013

…Andrea Battistoni…leads a spirited performance.

I was most impressed with Chinese soprano Guanqun…Her intense performance, laced with great musicianship, is enough reason alone to acquire this BD. Baritone Frontali is also a genuine article Verdian who makes the most of a role reminiscent of other Verdi fathers…None of this would matter if we did not get strong direction from the pit, and here we get a prodigy in the making in Andrea Battistoni, a definite talent to watch…this production will be a good introduction to an unduly neglected opera. © 2013 Read complete review
