Opera News, November 2013

…[Giacomo Prestia’s] Filippo is terrifying and heartbreaking in equal measure. His variety of facial expression, body position and gestural precision are worthy of any great actor…

…[Mario Malagnini’s] Carlo is beautifully placed and brassy without ever sounding unpleasant. Malagnini shines in both lyric and dramatic moments…As his Elisabetta, Cellia Costea pours gorgeous velvet through the middle of her voice…She is beautiful to look at…Simone Piazzola…brings an appealing baritone to the Marquis of Posa, as capable of messa di voce as of stentorian insistence.

…the costumes are universally excellent and support the drama as they should. Musically, Fabrizio Ventura leads a solid performance… © 2013 Opera News Read complete review

VERDI, G.: Don Carlo (Teatro Comunale di Modena, 2012) (NTSC) 724608
VERDI, G.: Don Carlo (Teatro Comunale di Modena, 2012) (Blu-ray, HD) 724704

The production has abundant atmosphere and always appeals to the eye…The singing is uniformly good, and particular praise can be directed towards Giacomo Prestia as King Philip, Luciano Montanaro as the Grand Inquisitor and Cellia Costea as Elizabeth of Valois. Mario Malagnini is a noble Don Carlo…

Alla Pozniak as Eboli dominates the stage during her ensembles…The chorus makes a reliable impression throughout and the ensembles are handled well both dramatically and musically. Fabrizio Ventura’s conducting brings much experience to bear upon proceedings, and there is a palpable sense of teamwork and commitment.

Recorded across four performances, the production looks appropriate at every stage…The production team take a bow at the end and receive a deserved ovation. Their success owes a great deal to the highly effective lighting which is brilliantly captured by the excellent Blu-ray image…

This issue is well documented with an essay and synopsis, and the disc includes a very useful introduction to the opera done in such a way that should appeal to the connoisseur and the novice alike…

While this recording from Modena does not feature any international superstars, both the presentation standards and the performance itself are admirably focused on achieving the highest standards possible. A firm and enthusiastic welcome is therefore in order. © 2013 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Christie Grimstad, July 2013

…this Don Carlo has a commendable cast in terms of acting and vocal profundity, and it might just be to the credit of Alessandro Ciammarughi’s richly detailed costuming that brings out the best in all the characters. Mario Malagnini and Simone Piazzola engage with superb precision during the ‘Mates Duet’, Alla Pozniak has her shiniest moment during “O don fatale”…Cellia Costea sings in the most comfortable range as Elisabetta; her projection is firm and resolute while her husband, King Philip, sung by Giacomo Prestia…manages to deliver a fine “Ella giammai m’amò!”.

Although many recordings exist of Don Carlo, this Unitel Classica production has mastered quite nicely all artistic disciplines in one cohesive production. © 2013 Read complete review
