OFFENBACH, J.: Belle Hélène (La) (Hamburg State Opera, 2014) (NTSC) 730908
OFFENBACH, J.: Belle Hélène (La) (Hamburg State Opera, 2014) (Blu-ray, HD) 731004

…packed with enchanting music…

Jennifer Larmore makes a slightly blowsy Helen, both visually and vocally, but proves game for the production’s nonsense. Slender Jun-Sang Han has the voice for Paris’s demanding aria and matches her in duets. Renaud Doucet, the director, also provides the minimal choreography for a score full of waltzes and a can-can. © 2016 Ballet Review

American Record Guide, January 2016

Larmore is superb as a rather mature Helene. Her singing is beautiful and she knows how to play this character with perfect comic timing. This is worth seeing for her performance alone. Jun-Sang Han’s Paris—acting and singing—is also very good, …Everyone else’s singing and acting is very good, and they are experienced farceurs. The chorus, dancers, and orchestra perform well, and the sound and picture quality are excellent. © 2016 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Such a singer is American mezzo Jennifer Larmore. …[She] is surrounded by excellent singers of every range, including a fine young tenor who sings Hélène’s dashing Pâris. Jun-Sang Han is slender and handsome, with a stage presence that is natural and appealing. His tenor is impressive in its warmth and beauty, able to sing both loud and soft in all ranges. © 2015 Seattle Gay News Read complete review

Jennifer Larmore has been quite rightly praised for her performance as the eponymous Hélène. She displays technical skill and considerable stamina in a piece which gives her few breaks. The audience were quite rightly ‘wowed’ by her big arias. The remaining cast are also top class and there is never any feeling of strain in projecting Offenbach’s engaging score. The Hamburg orchestra and chorus are, unsurprisingly, top class. The picture and sound are up to the usual standards of clarity and range. From a performance point-of-view this Blu-ray may safely be purchased. © 2015 MusicWeb International Read complete review
