This Blu-ray release features a recording of Verdi’s masterpiece at La Scala in Milan—an experience in itself. This new production is an event barely to be surpassed, especially when played before La Scala’s notoriously critical audience. Legendary stage director Peter Stein succeeds in delivering a lucid, uncluttered and elegant production acclaimed in equal measure by the press and public. The Choir and Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala are conducted with authority by Verdi specialist Zubin Mehta and the outstanding soloists include Carlo Colombara as the King, young mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili as the fiery Amneris, Kristin Lewis as an irresistible Aida, the wonderful Fabio Sartori Radamès, Finnish bass Matti Salminen as the High Priest, George Gagnidze as Aida’s father Amonasro and Chiara Isotton. ‘A perfect coup de théâtre.’ © 2016 Read complete review

…soprano Kristin Lewis sings her romanzas Ritorna vincitor! and O patria Mia with assurance, commitment and good strength. Gliding smoothly through her range the American lirico-spinto communicates a tender expression and acts well. …Anita Rachvelishvili gives the stand-out performance as the cunning Princess Amneris, the daughter of the Egyptian King. L’abborrita rivale a me sfuggia, the mezzo’s challenging aria, receives sterling treatment, firm and highly expressive. …With consistent self-assurance bass Carlo Colombara as the Egyptian King, baritone George Gagnidze, the Ethiopian King and bass Matti Salminen as Ramfis the high priest acquit themselves admirably. Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano under Zubin Mehta are hard to fault. © 2016 MusicWeb International Read complete review

VERDI, G.: Aida (La Scala, 2015) (Blu-ray, HD) 732304

The performance’s merits are its women’s. Kristin Lewis…sings and acts a most impressive Aida, musically sensitive and deeply felt. Though her warm, supple voice falls on the lirico side of spinto, she never pushes for effect, and the many ascents to piano on high are unfailingly poised and lovely. She has a formidable foil in Scala-trained Anita Rachvelishvili, an uncommonly youthful and feminine Amneris; …When these two are in control, the stage and the music come alive. © 2016 Opera News Read complete review

This new Aïda from La Scala has a lot going for it: its strengths include the conducting of Zubin Mehta, who draws excellent performances from the orchestra and chorus, and phrases the music with subtlety and great sensitivity to the emotional and dramatic flow of Verdi’s masterpiece. The singers are good too, especially Anita Rachvelishvili as Amneris. …Kristin Lewis makes a fine Aïda, …She has a beautiful voice and great talent and seems to get stronger as the performance progresses. © 2016 Classical Net Read complete review
