…the dancers give exemplary performances, starting with Anna Laudere as The Mother, Carsten Jung as Her Husband, and Lloyd Riggins as A Man—mature artists all.

Musically it’s also strong under Alessandro De Marchi’s baton, with the chorus of the Hamburg Opera and stylish soloists led by Julian Prégardien as the Evangelists, while the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra combines period practices with modern instruments. © 2016 Ballet Review

Bay Area Reporter, December 2015

Every year brings at least one new recording of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. This year it arrives in balletic form, courtesy of the orchestra and chorus of the Hamburg Staatsoper under Alessandro de Marchi. The brightly recorded music and dancing are exuberant, and the vocal soloists distinguished by tenor Julian Prégardien (Evangelist). Lord knows what Bach would have thought of the modern instruments or choreography, but the spectacular-looking dancers, the sheer joy of the opening, and the spirited reprise will convert many. © 2015 Bay Area Reporter
