VERDI, G.: Attila [Opera] (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, 2016) (NTSC) 748708
VERDI, G.: Attila [Opera] (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, 2016) (Blu-ray, HD) 748804

The Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna directed by Michele Mariotti plays well, with plenty of Verdian vigour, certainly very much at home in this repertoire. Coached by Andrea Faidutti, the chorus is in quite excellent voice, noticeably maintaining full solidarity with the orchestra. The chorus have the final say in the opera, when they compellingly intone the words “God, the people and the king are fully avenged”. © 2020 MusicWeb International Read complete review

VERDI, G.: Attila [Opera] (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, 2016) (Blu-ray, HD) 748804

Blunt, Garish and Oh So Good – A production from Bologna shows how underappreciated this Verdi opera is.

Leading the cast is Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, likely the finest Attila today. Singing with incisive power, impressive weight and appropriate agility… His big aria, with its catchy cabaletta, receives a textbook performance, immaculately sung and acted with convincing passion. He’s well matched by the Odabella of Maria José Siri, a soprano with the vocal and acting chops…

The orchestra, however, sounds excellent, and Michele Mariotti’s conducting is penetrating. Excellent sound and decent camera work make this well worth exploring. © 2019 Opera News Read complete review

VERDI, G.: Attila [Opera] (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, 2016) (Blu-ray, HD) 748804

Attila, from Bologna, looks elegant in Daniele Abbado’s updated production. Ildebrando D’Arcangelo takes the title role, with brooding good looks and a strong bass. Maria José Siri’s Odabella is stylish in intent… undeniably exciting. Michele Mariotti conducts, highlighting the dark tinta of Verdi’s scoring. © 2019 Opera Now

VERDI, G.: Attila [Opera] (Teatro Comunale di Bologna, 2016) (Blu-ray, HD) 748804

In this recording Verdi is greatly aided by a very fine cast led by Ildebrando D’Arcangelo in the title role. The Italian bass cuts a handsome figure, acts with subtlety, and sings with passion and a rock-solid Verdian sound.

Michele Mariotti leads the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro Communale di Bologna with absolute command of the Verdian style and with elegant pliability. © 2019 Rafael's Music Notes Read complete review
