As a performance, it is virtually flawless. Tim Mead is a tireless Admeto, singing with liquid smooth coloratura and doing his best to make a rounded character of this petulant, tormented king. When not gurning in his unfunny sumo jelly suit, William Berger is a characterful, pleasingly sung Hercules. Best of all are the rival women. Marie Arnet’s diamond bright, flinty tone is ideal for the jealous and loyal queen and contrasts well with the sweet, girlish tones of Kirsten Blaise’s fickle, sexually charged Antigona.
