ROSSINI, G.: Cenerentola (La) [Opera] (Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, 2016) (Blu-ray, HD) 752504

This live recording of Gioacchino Rossini’s Cenerentola from the Rome Opera is staged by Emma Dante. She focuses primarily on female figures as victims of an unjust situation or family. Cenerentola is also a victim for Dante, but one who knows exactly how to take revenge. The play is part of a viciously exaggerated, distorted, ironic puppet show.

The singers are excellent, and the choir impresses with a more than solid performance. In the ensemble scenes in particular, the voices are particularly sparkling. © 2020 Pizzicato Read complete review

…Italian mezzo Serena Malfi sings well with vocal purity of tone and a variety of colour, and acts convincingly as she portrays Cenerentola’s many vicissitudes. Argentinian tenor Juan Francisco Gatell sings pleasingly and acts with sincerity as Don Romiro, while Vito Priante as his valet Dandini acts well and sings with good tone. © 2020 MusicWeb International Read complete review

This is fun. Don’t look too closely or ask why the chorus are all wind-up dolls, for the musical side is so strong and the characterisation so convincing that it carries you along with it. Alessandro Corbelli is superb as Don Magnifico and the young couple, Juan Francisco Gatell and Serena Malfi, make light weight of Rossini’s florid musical lines. Alejo Perez keeps his orchestra on their toes with a sparkling account of the score. What’s not to like? © 2020 Lark Reviews
