David Patrick Stearns
The Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2001

"This is Obert-Thorn's finest hour. The greater triumph here is how the 1913 Berlin Philharmonic excerpts conducted by Alfred Hertz jump out of your speakers."

William Youngren
Fanfare, April 2000

"I would...advise anyone who loves Parisfal to get this set-even if he or she already has the Muck recordings in one or another incarnation. When we listen to Hertz conduct Parsifal we are listening to music that is barely 30 years old at the time of the sessions-before all those various 'traditions' had accumulated (or been invented by journalists). We won't get any closers that this to the horse's mouth. Also the sound on these disc-no surprise, since the transfers were made by Mark Obert-Thorn-is superb."

Martin Bernheimer
Opera News, March 2000

"Naxos's collection of early recordings of music from Parsifal represents a modern triumph over technological adversity. It also offers a valuable glimpse of historical performance practice."

Gramophone, November 1999

"This is a significant, indeed indispensable, issue on several counts. It makes available at a paltry price the most uplifting, superbly executed reading of Act 3 of Parsifal in the history of recording, in splendid transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn from Victor originals. If Naxos can issue this kind of material at super-budget price, why have we been paying for so long the full whack for similar issues from other companies?"
