Robert Levine

"This recording of Butterfly was Renata Tebaldi's first (of two), made in 1951. To be sure, she's in handsome voice. We are reminded of her great gifts: The luscious, round tone, the echt-Italianate sound and style, the sheer womanliness of it all...Giuseppe Campora was an underrated tenor, and his Pinkerton is better than most...As a bonus, Naxos has included arias sung by Tebaldi, recorded in 1941: Manon's "In quelle trine morbide...", Leonora's "Tacea la notte", and Marguerite's King of Thule and Jewel Song. All are lovely and fresh, with the Faust (sung in Italian) particularly fine."
