These two vintage recordings by Walter Gieseking are among the few available from the 1930s. The earlier is the Emperor, recorded in Vienna in 1934, while No. 4 followed five years later, recorded in Dresden with Boehm and the Saxon State Orchestra…these have a flowing account of the Emperor slow movement and a brisk, beautifully lilted one of the finale. By comparison, No. 4 is given a fresh, alert performance…
