James Miller
Fanfare, January 1987

Roger Dettmer, a mild enthusiast for the Concerto Gregoriano, reviewed this LP in Fanfare 8:1, and I have nothing to add to what he said: the concerto’s neglect may be unjustified but it’s also understandable. The Concerto Gregoriano is a fairly subdued piece without “big“ tunes and extremely modal; Respighi makes use of several different modes as the piece oozes along.

Nishizaki plays both it and the Poema Autunnale well enough, and the orchestra under Choo Hoey, is, at least, competent. © 1987 Fanfare Read complete review

Roger Dettmer
Fanfare, September 1984

Conductor Hoey’s orchestra is competent in the full sense of the word, not to imply virtuosic, with thoroughly proficient winds. The strings commence patchily, but settle into unison attacks, an ensemble A, and uniform phrasing. © 1984 Fanfare Read complete review
