Phillip Scott
Fanfare, May 2017

VILLA-LOBOS: Genesis / Erosao / Amazonas 8.223357
VILLA-LOBOS: Discovery of Brazil, Suites Nos. 1-4 8.223551
VILLA-LOBOS: Rudepoema / Dancas 8.223552

Duarte’s approach, as you might expect of someone who is a musicologist as well as a conductor, is analytical. As an inevitable corollary, his readings tend to be slower.

Duarte is helped greatly by his recording engineers in Bratislava but most of all by the high standard of orchestral playing from the Slovak Radio Orchestra. © 2017 Fanfare Read complete review

Penguin Guide, January 2009

These are imaginative scores with tropical colouring and exotic textures, all sounding rather similar in their luxuriance—but who cares! Amazonas is the earliest and most astonishing score, dating from the First World War, and in its vivid sonorities affirms Villa-Lobos’s contention that his first harmony book was the map of Brazil. The Bratislava strings could be more opulent, but the performances under a Brazilian conductor are very good indeed, as in the recording.
