David Denton
David's Review Corner, January 2017

A showcase for the mezzo-soprano, Liang Ning, who was born in China, completed her studies in the United States, and now enjoys a major international opera career. The present disc portrays her in three operatic roles, her very rounded voice and impeccable intonation ideal for the two excerpts from Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. She shows her ability in the coloratura required for the third act aria, Que fais-tu, blanche touterelle, from Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, then sparkles in Faites-lui mes aveux from Faust. The group of Chinese traditional songs are clothed with concert garb very much in the world of Western art songs in orchestrated versions, here opening with Kang Ding Love Song from Western China. My favourite is the gorgeous melody, Sunset, though the gentle Lullaby is also most attractive, the disc ending with Qing Zhu’s I live on the shore of Yangtze River. The release is a reissue of a recording made in Beijing in 1984, the engineers obviously adding reverberation. © 2017 David’s Review Corner
