…these two discs are substantial additions to the Spohr discography…[these] quartets make for rewarding listening, and I wouldn’t be without these two volumes. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

David's Review Corner, May 2014

After the death of Louis Spohr in 1859, the tide of popularity turned against him in a world where the style of composition had changed for ever in the Beethoven era. He had, nevertheless, in the early 19th century provided opera houses, concert halls and salons with a wealth of music that was readily attractive and elegantly constructed. His early career being that of a virtuoso violinist, and though the number of subsequent violinists trained by him has been vastly exaggerated, he was also a very distinguished teacher. That background resulted in thirty-six string quartets, this being the sixteenth and penultimate volume in a complete cycle. They have in common the need for a virtuoso leading violin, and no doubt that fact accounts the rarity of todays concert performances. He was also a good melody-maker as he fills the works with a mix of brilliant and charming material…of all his works in this genre, the Twenty-six presents the whole gamut of technique to the first violin…this is one of Spohr’s most happy scores with a bubbling final polonaise. Completing the disc Variations is a early work where the first violin acts in a solo role…As a violinist I really feel for Jaroslav Krasnikov, the leader of the Concertino String Quartet of the Moscow Philharmonic…Good sound. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
