The collected Grieg orchestral works under one roof: romantic, melodious, often gripping and infinitely attractive. © 2014 Audiophile Audition Read complete review

Engeset…offers two welcome novelties: three of the Slatter orchestrated by Oistein Sommerfeldt, and most interesting of all, the massive Ballade for piano arranged for large orchestra by 20th century Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt. This massively scored transcription really brings out the music’s tragic power, and it’s very intensely performed by Engeset and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The other advantage…is a finer soloist for the piano concerto in Havard Gimse. …Gimse goes quite a bit farther in terms of imaginative phrasing and tone color.

The Peer Gynt incidental music…is played, sung, and spoken to the hilt. © 2014 ClassicsToday.com Read complete review

David's Review Corner, June 2014

‘However many recordings you may have, you simply have to buy this one’, I once wrote of a release in Bjarte Engeset’s complete edition of Grieg’s orchestral works. Now in a box not much wider than three normal CDs, you can have the eight discs in slip cases and full sleeve notes. I suppose we all put a performance of the Piano Concerto into our early disc collection and become wedded to it, but Havard Gimse gives an account that you will always return to with pleasure. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra make a brief showing with a pleasing disc of Grieg’s orchestration of piano pieces—here on disc 2. Throughout the long period over which the recordings were made, they were marked by their excellence of sound quality. At any price I would be fervently recommending the release to you, but at super budget price they are simply being given away. © 2014 David’s Review Corner
