SZYMANOWSKI: Piano Works, Vol. 1 8.553016
SZYMANOWSKI: Piano Works, Vol. 2 8.553300

Martin Roscoe proves a perceptive and sensitive interpreter of Szymanowski and the first two discs augur well for this ongoing series. In the four Mazurkas, Op. 50, that open the first CD he shows real feeling and insight. He is equally persuasive in the early Chopinesque Etudes, Op. 4, and the refined impressionism of Metopes. The Second Sonata is a problematic piece, full of virtuosic hurdles, romantic gestures and Regerian ingenuity. The second disc gives us the C major Fantasy, Op. 14, and the Op. 10 Variations, in which the debts to Scriabin and Chopin have yet to be fully discharged. A fine account of the Masques, too. This is playing of quality. As far as recording is concerned, Martin Roscoe is well served.

Gramophone, September 1995

"If I find myself on the whole preferring Roscoe it is because I prefer Naxos's ample and natural piano sound to Nimbus's, which I find rather disembodied and, at the top of the instrument in staccato, somewhat brittle... the greater realism of Naxos's piano sound is more than adequate compensation. The very low price of the new version, and the fact that Naxos are issuing their Szymanowski series single CDs, are strong arguments in Roscoe's favour as well. A bargain, and strongly recommended."
