Mendelssohn’s epic Symphony No. 2 (“Lobgesang, Hymn of Praise”) (was written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg’s inventing the printing press (8.553522). It is in ten movements, some orchestral, some choral, some for solo voices and lasts over an hour. It contains some very attractive music, handled with the composer’s usual mastery. Excellent performance by Jun Märkl leading the MDR Symphony and Radio Choir, with Ruth Ziesak, Mojca Erdmann and Christian Elsner as fine soloists.
