Penguin Guide, January 2009

Whatever one’s reaction to Messiaen’s music, he creates a world entirely his own. Håkan Austbø is completely attuned to this sensibility, and the recording is exemplary. Aficionados of Messiaen need not hesitate.

Katrine Ames
House & Garden, May 2002

"The natural sounds of the out-of-doors are fine, but how about some music while you plant and prune?...Avian evocations abound in music...For inventiveness and ambition (in the best sense), go to Catalogue d'Oiseaux, a staggering 1957 piano work. Olivier Messiaen, bird lover, colorist, and rhythmic innovator, wove through the score songs of 13 birds of his native France, from the alpine chough to the curlew. (Håkon Austbø has a fine recording on Naxos).

"A very satisfying performance, in short, and it has been sensitively recorded"

BBC Music Magazine

"Austbo is a convincing advocate of Messiaen's vision, combining virtuosity and poetry.....Naxos should be commended on a magnificent achievement"
