Penguin Guide, January 2009

The six works here are neatly balanced, three dating from before the climactic period of The Planets and three after. So the generously lyrical Somerset Rhapsody, Beni Mora and the long-neglected Invocation for Cello and Orchestra (with Timothy Hugh a moving soloist) lead on to the tauter and more astringent post-war works: the Hardy-inspired Egdon Heath, the darkly intense prelude and fugue, Hammersmith, and the Fugal Overture. Fresh and idiomatic performances, superbly recorded in full and brilliant sound.

Gramophone, June 1998

"This disc, superbly recorded in the Henry Wood Hall, Glasgow....Particularly beautiful is the performance of Somerset Rhapsody"

BBC Music Magazine

"All are played with finesse and character by the RSNO....Invocation eloquently played here by the cellist, Tim Hugh.....In short another Naxos winner"
