In contrast with the rival version of this masterpiece of Russian Orthodox music, which offer substantial couplings, the Naxos issue presents a liturgical performance complete with the priests’ solos, almost 70 minutes long. Not all collectors will want such a format for repeated listening, but for those who prefer such an authentic course, this Naxos disc can be warmly recommended, strongly and idiomatically performed with fine solos, and atmospherically recorded in a church in Kiev.
