Liszt made his Rossini transcriptions in 1836, and they are rarely heard in the recital room or on record. The only rival is Leslie Howard’s set on Hyperion, and this performance by the Yugoslav-born Kemal Gekić at super-bargain price has infinitely more wit, lightness of touch and subtlety of articulation. Were the price-tags reversed, this would still be the preferred recommendation. In fact this is dazzling playing that sparkles when required and has an effortless brilliance that is quite captivating.
