Bernadette Greevy uses her opulent mezzo, firm and even, to bring out the lyrical beauty of Mahler’s writing in all three of these orchestral song-cycles. She may lack a degree of vitality in such a song as the second of the Wayfaring Lad cycle, the song that gave Mahler his first theme in his First Symphony, but her poise in such a great song as the Rückert setting, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, is most satisfying, readily compensating for any lack of emotional weight compared with the finest interpretations. The Irish National Symphony Orchestra play with rich, velvety tone in every section, helped by the warmly atmospheric recording, made in the National Concert Hall in Dublin.
