Though Leaper’s slow account of the ‘Enigma’ theme makes an unpromising start, his reading of the Variations is the most beautiful, with ripely resonant string-playing and with warmly expressive rubato in Nimrod suggesting that the Slovak players had been own over to Elgar by Leaper’s advocacy. Most refined of all is the Capella Istropolitana’s account of the Serenade, with the slow movement specially beautiful, finely shaded. An excellent compilation of Elgar’s most popular orchestral pieces, brilliantly recorded.
