Penguin Guide, January 2009

In Miriam Kramer and Simon Over the sonatas also have sympathetic advocates: both artists play with exemplary taste and sensitivity, and Simon Over produces a wonderful range of colour. So, for that matter, does Kramer, who has great refinement of tone. Good recordings, with plenty of space round the aural image.

"As these strong, passionate performances show, Bloch's chamber music is well worth re-examining, especially the one-movement Second Violin Sonata."

John Kersey
International Record Review, April 2000

"Happily, the playing of Miriam Kramer quickly reveals itself to be the result of a careful assimilation of the structure of each piece, judging with skill its relative proportions of action and reflection. Her handling of the diffuse single-movement Second sonata struck me as exceptional, showing a commitment and flair that sustains the listener's interest throughout the work's 23 minutes.Naxos's recording is detailed and atmospheric."

Luca Sabbatini

"Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch seems to be registering a renewal of interest: this is the third new CD entirely devoted to his music released within a month. It is also the most successful. Violinist Miriam Kramer displays a good balance between intensity of expression and textural precision. Her tone is both agreeable and profound, and her intonation adequately matches Bloch's frequent modal inflections and double-string chords. Pianist Simon Over plays with similar affection and care. Let's hope that the same performers will give us Baal Shem and Bloch's remaining works for violin and piano and violin solo."

Steve Holtje

"Violinist Miriam Kramer's tone is vibrato-laden, yet bittersweet, perfectly suited to this repertoire. Pianist Simon Over is a sympathetic accompanist with a finely gradated control of dynamics-especially crucial in the Sonata No. 2. At budget price, and being the only CD containing this well-chosen and logical combination of items, this is highly recommendable."

"...les intelligentes qualités d'expression et d'intonation que [Kramer et Over] nous révèlent dans ce disque nous font espérer un deuxième volume, où pourraient être réunis les Suites pour violon seul, Baal Shem, le Poème mystique et la Nuit exotique.

"... given the intelligent qualities of expression and intonation that [Kramer and Over] reveal in this disc, we look forward to their second volume, which to include the Suites for Solo Violin, Baal Shem, the Mystical Poem and the Exotic Night."
