Spohr String Quintet feature a second viola, which gives them a characteristically full, slightly bland texture. But the suave opening theme of the E flat major Quartet is deceptive, for it is strong enough to influence the two following movements including the near-melancholy Largetto and the attractive Minuet and Trio. In the G major work a similarly mild opening theme is to dominate. Both Quintets are warmly and sympathetically played by the Danubius Quartet, augmented by Sándor Papp, and smoothly and pleasingly recorded. Originally on Marco Polo, this reissue is eminently competitive at its Naxos price.
