Christopher Latham
Limelight, October 2006

The Hungarian violinist Barnabas Kelemen has a resume of violin competitions and awards as long as his arm, and based on this CD, is clearly a major talent. His playing is clean, strong and taut with a sound that is focused to the point of almost being steely. His interpretative choices indicate a classical sensibility rather than a romantic one, which suits the Bartók works well. The two rarely played Bartók Rhapsodies sound best of all, and the surprisingly beautiful early Andante also was a welcome discovery. The Romanian Folk Dances are played with style and verve as is Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen. Also pleasing were three rarely performed Franz Liszt slow movements, which showed Kelemen at his most poetic and eloquent. The Ravel Tzigane seemed to miss some required drive at the end but altogether the CD is a very strong statement by a musician who clearly has fingers to burn.
