Violin Concerto is a work on the most ambitious scale, obviously with an eye on the Elgar Concerto in the use of a large orchestra as a backcloth…it has attractive and readily identifiable folksong-like ideas. It is an impressive work, and it is played with much feeling by Marat Bisengaliev, who is given powerful support by the BBC Scottish Orchestra under Lionel Friend…The Concerto is prefaced by a jolly little overture introducing the folksong. The Miller of Dee, and is followed by a rather good, small-scale symphony, with its three movements all based on mark-like themes, ranging over a whole gamut of emotions and ending forcefully. There is very good back-up documentation.
