Amy Beach was best known in her own lifetime for her piano pieces and songs, of which she wrote over 100. Many are simple, Victorian-style ballads, but all have accompaniments of quality to give a real backcloth for the singer, as Catherin Bringerud, an excellent accompanist, shows here. Katherine Kelton is at home in the repertoire and, although her vibrato is occasionally too insistent, she responds to the finer examples, such as the Scottish Dearie, O sweet content, Though I take the wings of morning and the charming Candy lion and Thanksgiving fable. Full texts and (where necessary) translations are included.
