This CD’s significance and weighting is Cowell’s East-West fusion in such works as Homage to Iran, where he melds a Persian zarb drum and Middle Eastern melodic and rhythmic techniques with western idioms. In Set of Five, Indian percussion shakes hands with western baroque and Cowell’s elbow clusters and string strumming. Cowell threw his lance four decades into the future. All his experimenting is now mainstreamed into postwar modern music. New York’s modern ensemble Continuum gives a lively cross-section of all Cowell’s experimental styles across both volumes. Recommended.
